Edinburgh Cannons 11 - Edinburgh Diamond Devils 19

Devils Account

The Scottish Champion Devils, started the defence of their title on a typically sunny spring day against thier old rivals the Edinburgh Cannons. The Cannons were without star pitcher Jason as he was away on a radical new scheme to increase the club's youth team. The Devils entered the game confident with the spine of their championship side intact (although a spine in serious need of a chiropractor)

Wee Willie Keeler's advice on hitting was simple: "hit it where they ain't". Over his Hall of Fame career he would do so 2,932 times, and in 1897 had a streak of 44 consecutive games with a base hit, a record which would stand until 1941 when Joe DiMaggio did so in 56 consecutive games. On Sunday, the similarities between the Diamond Devils and Keeler were few and far between, but the contrast could hardly have been starker.

The Devils made the trip to Tollcross park for the last time this season, to take on a constantly improving GBA side.

Daniel Leadingham started on the hill for the Devils and was on top form and he needed to be as Xander of GBA also shut down the Devils in the first inning. The Devils couldnt get any hits in the second either, but James was able to show off his fancy dance moves to dodge his way round the GBA fielders and steal home. Dan was grateful to his brother Chris Leadingham who helped turn a 6-3-2 double play to end the GBA threat in the bottom of the inning.

The Cannons were able to get a run off him in the first before the Devils shook the cobwebs off their bats to bat all the way round and plate 7 runs in the inning, highlighted by a bases clearing single by Chris Wilmot.

The Cannons fought back with two more runs, but Dan showed off that Curveball he has been practising to work his way out of any more trouble.
